Description

Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Navajo Wilderness Adventure – Surreal Hiking & Sculpted Desert Landscapes

Step into the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Navajo Wilderness, a remote and otherworldly landscape in northwest New Mexico’s San Juan Basin. This guided hike winds through the Valley of Dreams, where eroded shale forms dramatic, whimsical shapes like Alien Throne, Sentinel, and the Giant Mushroom. Every turn of the trail reveals surreal vistas that invite exploration, reflection, and photography.
The hike covers approximately 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) over uneven terrain, taking about 5–5.5 hours. The route offers a sense of solitude and quiet, with minimal human presence and vast open horizons. Photographers of all levels will find exceptional opportunities to capture sculpted formations, intricate textures, and the shifting desert light.
Guides of Navajo and Pueblo heritage bring the landscape to life with stories of local history, cultural traditions, and Indigenous knowledge, adding depth and meaning to each formation. Small group sizes ensure a personal, immersive experience, allowing you to explore, photograph, and fully absorb this unique wilderness.

Duration

  1. Approx. 5.5 hours
  2. Hiking distance: ~4.8 km (3 miles) over uneven, desert terrain

Location / Where to Meet

Meet your guide at the Sinclair gas station in Nageezi, New Mexico to begin the tour. Guests can either follow in their own vehicle or use the optional $37 per person transportation service. The drive to the trailhead is a 46-mile round trip on county dirt roads.
Please ensure your vehicle is fully fueled. This is a remote desert location with no services at the trailhead, so plan ahead before arriving. Nageezi is the last reliable stop for fuel, food, and supplies. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent in the area, so download directions in advance and arrive fully prepared.
If you're coming from Santa Fe, Taos, or Albuquerque, the most direct route is typically via Cuba (approximately 2.5 hours from Santa Fe, 3 hours from Taos, and 2 hours from Albuquerque). If you choose to route through Farmington instead, you’ll find full services there about 1 hour from the Sinclair in Nageezi.
