Description

Spend Your Afternoon Hiking, Swimming & Chasing Waterfalls!

Turn your afternoon into a Maui rainforest adventure with a short hike to two waterfalls and natural freshwater swimming pools hidden within the Hoʻolawa Valley. This easy guided hike covers approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) round trip, making it a great option for families, casual hikers, or anyone who wants to experience Maui’s waterfalls without committing to a long or strenuous trek.

Follow your naturalist guide along a streamside trail beneath the forest canopy, crossing a small footbridge and navigating a few rocky sections as warm afternoon light filters through the trees. Your first reward comes quickly: a roughly 10-foot (3 m) waterfall spilling into a clear natural pool where you can jump in, cool off, or simply enjoy the scenery from the shoreline.

Continue a little farther into the valley and you'll reach the larger of the two falls, cascading approximately 20 feet (6 m) into another freshwater swimming hole. Spend time floating beneath the falls, swimming through the pool, or trying an optional rock jump when conditions allow. Between swims, your guide will point out tropical plants and fruit growing along the trail while sharing stories about the valley and its natural environment.

The afternoon departure makes this adventure especially easy to fit into a Maui itinerary. Sleep in, spend the morning at the beach, or pair it with another activity before trading the coastline for cool freshwater and rainforest trails. You'll still get the full experience—hiking, two waterfalls, swimming holes, tropical forest, and optional cliff jumping—with plenty of daylight to enjoy the rest of your evening afterward.

ADVENTURE PROVIDED BY Hike Maui

FAQs

Does your guide provide gear and food for the tour?

Your guide provides most of what you need for a comfortable day outdoors, including snacks (or lunch, depending on the tour), a backpack, a poncho in case of rain, insect repellent when needed, and hand sanitizer.

Do I need to bring anything on the tour?

Bring water, a towel if your tour includes swimming, and reef-safe sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide-based sunscreens are recommended). A camera or phone is fine to bring — just pack it in a resealable bag or dry bag to protect it from moisture. You're responsible for any personal gear you choose to bring along.

Will there be a bathroom on the trail?

Some trailheads have toilets or porta-potties; on others, guests use the surrounding bush when nature calls. If that arrangement isn't comfortable for you, let your guide know before setting out so you can figure out what works best together.

What if it rains?

We’ve found that a little rain adds to the adventure and complimentary ponchos are available if needed. Plus, swimming under a waterfall in the rain is an unforgettable experience. We do run our tours in most weather conditions but reserve the right to alter tour parameters if safety issues arise.

Do you provide hotel transfers?

Hotel transfers are offered on several of our tours, subject to availability. For an additional fee, we’ll pick you up at your hotel and return you after the tour. Transportation is available from all major resort hotels and condominiums, but not private residences or in towns outside of our service area. Our vans are PUC certified, commercially insured, serviced regularly for high performance, are air conditioned and are cleaned and disinfected after every tour.

What makes the afternoon departure different from the morning one?

Afternoon departures leave later in the day, so this option works well if you want to sleep in, have a morning activity booked elsewhere, or prefer swimming after the pools have had more time to warm up.

How difficult is the hike, and are there physical requirements?

The walk covers about a mile round trip on a natural, sometimes uneven and slippery trail, with a short climb built in. It's manageable for most fitness levels, including kids, but participants should be steady on their feet without assistance.

Is transportation to the trailhead included?

Yes. Guests meet at the Kahului Park & Ride, and your guide drives the group to and from the Hoʻolawa Valley trailhead as part of the tour.
