FAQs

What marine life can I see when snorkeling at Fajardo, Puerto Rico’s reefs?

Common sightings include colorful reef fish such as sergeant majors, blue tangs, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish. You’ll likely see cleaner shrimp and arrow crabs nestled in coral crevices, and schools of grunts and snappers weaving through the reef. Moray eels often peek from holes, while southern stingrays rest in the sand below.

Sea turtles—especially green and hawksbill turtles—are frequently spotted grazing on seagrass or gliding over the reef. Rays, including spotted eagle rays and southern stingrays, are also seen occasionally. While not guaranteed, nurse sharks are sometimes found resting under ledges or cruising through the reef. Lobsters, filefish, trunkfish, and even the occasional barracuda or octopus round out the list of regular reef residents. With visibility often ranging from 30–75 feet (9–23 meters) and a mix of shallow and mid-depth sites (15–80 ft / 6–30 meters), Fajardo offers a rewarding dive experience full of color and life.

Do I have to snorkel or can I just stay on board?

There is no obligation to go snorkeling. If you do not feel comfortable you’re more than welcome to stay on board. There is no price difference for that.

How long is the boat ride out to the sites?

Fajardo: 27 minutes approximately from the pier.

Are the seas rough?

After 10:00 a.m. it can be windy. Usually May through December have the calmest seas. Fajardo, having more protection from the wind and swells usually has calmer seas than other sites. Motion sickness pill taken at least 1:00 hour before departure is recommended for those prone to motion sickness.

Do snorkel guides dive or snorkel with us?

Yes! All of our snorkel guides are certified to provide CPR and are very well trained and knowledgeable on the areas. They will jump in the water with you.

Can I bring children on this excursion?

Fajardo morning or afternoon snorkeling- kids of all ages are welcome on this trip. Do keep in mind that the boat has a shade but does not have space for a stroller or a play yard . We can let the baby sit on laps or a small car seat.

What is the average range of visibility?

Fajardo and Culebra: Visibility ranges from 20 to 70 feet (6 to 21 meters), with the ocean floor usually being the limit.

What is the Blue Flag Award & PADI Green Star Award?

The Blue Flag Award and the PADI Green Star Award recognize sustainability efforts in marine environments but apply to different aspects of ocean conservation.

  • Blue Flag Award: This international certification is given to beaches and marinas that meet high environmental, safety, and water quality standards. It ensures that a beach is clean, well-managed, and supports conservation efforts.
  • PADI Green Star Award: This award is given to PADI dive centers that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability. It recognizes eco-friendly practices such as energy conservation, responsible waste management, and participation in marine conservation initiatives.

Both awards highlight dedication to protecting marine ecosystems, whether through sustainable tourism or responsible diving operations.

What’s the best time of year to snorkel in Puerto Rico?

Diving in Puerto Rico is great year-round, with warm water and excellent visibility no matter the season. December to April typically offers the clearest visibility, while May to November brings warmer water temperatures, often reaching 84°F (29°C). There’s always amazing marine life to see, making any time a great time to dive!

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’

Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?

You can snorkel with a beard or mustache but it can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before diving. If you’d prefer not to shave your mustache, please bring petroleum jelly or chapstick with you. If you coat your mustache in that chapstick or jelly, it may be able to seal and prevent water from getting in.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?

Glasses cannot be worn while snorkeling, but contacts are perfectly fine and recommended for the best experience. Prescription masks are not available for rent, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Additionally, there is an automatic correction effect that occurs underwater due to light refraction, making things appear clearer, but contacts or a personal prescription mask will provide the best visibility.
