Description

AIARE Level 2 Camping-Based Avalanche Course - Analyzing Snow Stability and Avalanche Hazard

Take your avalanche education beyond the classroom and into the heart of the Colorado backcountry. The AIARE 2 Camping-Based Course near Breckenridge is designed for experienced backcountry travelers looking to refine their avalanche forecasting and decision-making skills through direct, hands-on experience. Over three days and two nights, you’ll learn to interpret snow, weather, and terrain data while managing risk in a true winter environment—sleeping under the stars in tents or snow shelters built by your team.

Set in the Montezuma area near Peru Creek, this course unfolds in a historic mining valley that now serves as an ideal classroom for winter travel and avalanche study. The surrounding peaks and drainages offer varied terrain for analyzing snowpack structure, observing changing weather patterns, and practicing terrain selection in real time. Evenings in camp offer time to reflect, review field observations, and discuss leadership strategies in small groups.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to evaluate complex snow and weather conditions, communicate your findings within a group, and take a leadership role in backcountry decision-making. This course is both an educational progression and an adventure—combining the rigor of AIARE curriculum with the self-reliance required for winter camping in avalanche terrain.

Location

This AIARE 2 course will be run as a snow camping adventure near Montezuma. In the late 1870s, the road up Handcart Gulch and over Webster Pass was an important mining road into Montezuma and Breckenridge during the silver boom in 1863. Handcart Gulch got its name from handcarts used by miners to carry supplies up the valley. Today Webster Pass Road provides a great opportunity to enjoy spectacular scenery along the Continental Divide.
This area is very popular with 4WD enthusiasts in the summer but becomes a winter wonderland for snowshoers and backcountry skiers/riders in the winter while providing an incredible opportunity for avalanche terrain study. Students and instructors will camp in this beautiful area using snow shelters or tents to enjoy the full experience of winter backcountry travel while in a more controlled environment.
Your course instructors will contact you in advance to set up meeting details. Students will be encouraged to use our CAG company vans or to carpool to help alleviate trailhead overcrowding.
