Description

AIARE Level 2 Avalanche Education – Utah

The AIARE 2 Avalanche Course is a three-day advanced program for backcountry travelers who have already completed an AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue course and have at least a year of touring experience. This course is designed to sharpen your hazard assessment and leadership skills, preparing you for more complex decision-making in challenging terrain. Taught by highly experienced ski and splitboard guides who are both AIARE providers and AMGA certified, this course ensures you learn from instructors with real-world expertise and teaching experience.

Building on the foundations of AIARE 1, the AIARE 2 teaches you how to evaluate weather, snowpack, and avalanche processes, and how to apply that knowledge in the field. You’ll gain experience leading a small group, facilitating discussions, promoting safe terrain choices, and implementing simple risk management strategies. This course gives aspiring leaders and committed backcountry skiers and riders the tools to plan and execute safe trips in avalanche terrain—even when supporting information is limited.
By completion, you’ll be able to identify critical avalanche hazards, interpret snow and weather observations, and implement a basic forecasting framework that can be used with or without local avalanche bulletins.

AIARE 2 Learning outcomes

  1. Differentiate where specific avalanche hazards exist within the landscape and identify avalanche terrain where consequences may be more severe.
  2. Use and interpret weather, snow, and avalanche observations to locate appropriate terrain prior to entering and while in the field.
  3. Demonstrate leadership skills within a small team that includes facilitating small group discussion, promoting appropriate terrain selection, and utilizing simple risk-management strategies.
  4. Implement a basic forecasting framework that can be used in conjunction with and in the absence of local supporting avalanche information.

FAQs

Which avalanche education course should I choose?

Choosing the right avalanche course depends on your background and goals. For a detailed breakdown of which course is right for you, check out our blog:Backcountry Education Guide: Choosing the Right Avalanche Course

Do I need previous avalanche training to take this course?

Yes, you'll need to have taken AIARE 1 and have at least one year of touring experience since taking that course. If you don't feel that you've retained a strong foundation of AIARE 1, we recommend taking a refresher course before moving on to AIARE 2.

What kind of fitness level do I need?

These are full days outside in the winter. AIARE 2 requires moderate fitness, with 3000+ feet of elevation gain per day - expect longer days and bigger climbs.

Do I need backcountry skiing or splitboarding experience?

Yes. All courses take place in real backcountry terrain, so you need to be comfortable moving on skis or a splitboard in variable conditions. You’ll need at least a year of touring experience after AIARE 1 and comfort on black terrain.

What if the weather is bad?

Courses run in most winter conditions. Only truly unsafe weather (such as road closures or avalanche warnings that prevent safe access) would delay or reschedule a course.

Can snowboarders take the course?

Yes! Splitboarders are welcome and encouraged to join.

How is AIARE 2 different from AIARE 1?

AIARE 1 teaches foundational skills for traveling safely in avalanche terrain. AIARE 2 is for more experienced backcountry travelers who want to lead trips, make decisions in complex terrain, and deepen their understanding of snow science.
