Description

Winter Park AIARE Level 1 - Three-Day Lift-Accessed Avalanche Education

Winter Park Resort sits at the gateway to some of Colorado’s most dynamic and varied backcountry terrain. The area’s snowpack is complex, with layers influenced by elevation, wind, and weather, making it an ideal setting to learn avalanche awareness and decision-making. Our AIARE Level 1 course combines classroom instruction with lift-accessed field days to give participants hands-on experience evaluating snow stability, recognizing avalanche hazards, and applying risk management strategies.
This three-day course is designed for new and intermediate backcountry travelers who want a thorough introduction to avalanche safety. Pre-course e-learning ensures students arrive with foundational knowledge, while the classroom sessions focus on interpreting avalanche forecasts, understanding snowpack and weather patterns, and learning essential companion rescue techniques. Field sessions at Winter Park allow students to practice these skills on real terrain, including areas not typically open to the public. Touring components outside resort boundaries further reinforce backcountry travel skills and situational awareness. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to make informed, safe decisions in avalanche-prone terrain.
