Description

4-Hour Los Olivos E-Bike Rental — Ride to Local Wineries & Olive Oil Tastings in Santa Barbara Wine Country

Los Olivos sits at the center of Santa Barbara Wine Country — the historic Santa Ynez Valley region made famous by the film Sideways — and a four-hour Pedego rental is the best possible way to experience it. The shop is in the heart of the village, and within minutes of pickup you can be riding through open vineyard corridors and sun-drenched countryside toward olive oil farms, lavender fields, and some of the region's most celebrated tasting rooms.

This is a self-guided adventure. Staff will fit you to your bike, hand you a detailed route map with suggested destinations, and point you toward the route that best matches your interests — whether that's the scenic country roads of Ballard Canyon heading south, the vineyard-lined Foxen Canyon Wine Trail heading north, or a flat and easy cruise along the Don Henry bike path toward Solvang. You can follow the suggested route or create your own. The Pedego's pedal-assist handles the rolling terrain of the valley with ease, so the hills that would challenge a regular bike become a non-issue. Expect to cover 15–25 miles (24–40 km) over your four hours, with plenty of time for stops along the way.

Every bike comes equipped with a heavy-duty saddle bag — purpose-built for carrying wine bottles, olive oil, picnic supplies, and anything else you pick up along the route.

ADVENTURE PROVIDED BY Pedego Electric Bikes Los Olivos

FAQs

What routes can I take on the 4-hour rental?

There are two primary suggested routes, and staff will help you choose based on your interests:

Route 1 — Foxen Canyon Wine Trail (north/northeast): Head north out of Los Olivos along Foxen Canyon Road — the Santa Ynez Valley's most celebrated wine trail corridor. Stops include Petros Winery, Andrew Murray Vineyards, Koehler Winery, and Fess Parker Winery. The route involves some rolling terrain and gentle climbing on Foxen Canyon Road, manageable on the e-bike. Total distance for a full loop is approximately 15–20 miles (24–32 km).

Route 2 — Ballard Canyon & South (south/southeast): Head south from the village through open vineyard corridors toward Ballard Canyon — one of the valley's most scenic and quiet roads. Stops include Beckmen Vineyards, Roblar Winery, Brander Winery, Clairmont Farms Lavender, and Global Gardens Olive Oil Farm. This route is generally flatter and more sheltered. Distance varies by how far south you ride.

Don Henry Bike Path (flat option): For a more relaxed ride, the Don Henry/Dan Henry bike path runs between Los Olivos and Solvang along Alamo Pintado Road — a marked, low-traffic bike lane on a scenic country road connecting the two towns. Great for riders who prefer flatter terrain or want a peaceful cruise between the villages.

You can also create your own route — the detailed map provided at pickup covers the full valley with all wineries, farms, and points of interest marked.

What are the recommended stops along the route?

These are favorite local destinations:

  • Ballard Canyon — scenic canyon road through open vineyards
  • Global Gardens Olive Oil Farm — California olive oil farm with tastings and products to take home
  • Lincourt Winery — relaxed Santa Ynez Valley winery
  • Beckmen Vineyards — acclaimed organic estate winery just south of Los Olivos with a beautiful pond-side tasting setting
  • Clairmont Farms Lavender — fragrant lavender farm with tours, products, and picnic-worthy grounds
  • Foxen Canyon Wine Trail — the valley's signature winery corridor heading north from Los Olivos

How hilly is the terrain?

It depends on the route. The village of Los Olivos and the immediate surrounding valley are gently rolling with some flat stretches. Ballard Canyon Road and Foxen Canyon Road both have real hills — but the Pedego's pedal-assist makes them very manageable. Reviews from guests in their 60s and 70s describe arriving at tasting rooms without breaking a sweat. If you prefer flatter riding, the Don Henry bike path to Solvang is the best option.

Can I visit wineries during the rental?

Absolutely — winery hopping is the centerpiece of the experience. Staff can make reservation recommendations before you head out. Please taste in moderation and do not ride if impaired.

Is there a minimum age for wine tasting?

You must be 21 or older to consume alcohol at any winery. Riders aged 16–20 are welcome to rent and ride, but cannot participate in wine tastings. Please bring valid ID.

Is there a good place to pick up lunch along the route?

Yes — Panino Los Olivos in the village is the most popular lunch pick-up option, with sandwiches and picnic supplies that pack perfectly into the saddle bag. Staff can recommend other options based on your route.

What is a Pedego electric bike and how does it work?

Pedego electric bikes use a pedal-assist system — as you pedal, the motor kicks in to amplify your effort. You can dial the assist level up or down depending on how much help you want, and most models have a throttle for power without pedaling. In the Santa Ynez Valley, that assistance is everything: the canyon roads have real climbs, and the ability to arrive at a tasting room without breaking a sweat is exactly the point.

How far can I go on a single charge?

Most Pedego bikes are rated for 20–60 miles (32–97 km) per charge. The 4-hour rental routes typically cover 15–25 miles (24–40 km), well within range. Even the hillier Foxen Canyon and Ballard Canyon routes are comfortable on a full battery.

Do I need experience riding a bicycle to rent an e-bike?

You should be able to ride a standard bicycle comfortably before renting. The pedal-assist adds speed and power; basic bike handling is required. Staff will walk you through the controls and get you fitted before you head out.

Are helmets required?

Yes — helmets are included with every rental and required to be worn. California law requires riders under 18 to wear a helmet.

Do I need to be a strong cyclist?

The e-bike handles the hills that would otherwise slow you down on the canyon roads. Riders of all fitness levels — including guests in their 60s and 70s who report rarely cycling — consistently describe the experience as manageable and fun. The valley is best explored at a relaxed pace with stops, and the pedal-assist makes it all feel effortless.

Can I carry wine or purchases on the bike?

Yes — every rental includes a heavy-duty saddle bag large enough to carry wine bottles, a picnic, hats, sandals, and other purchases made along the route. This is a staple of the Los Olivos experience.

What is the weather policy?

Rentals go forward in all but severe weather. The Santa Ynez Valley is one of California's sunniest regions, but summer afternoons can be very warm. Early start times are recommended from June through September, and extra water is essential. The experience may be subject to change in the event of severe or unsafe weather conditions.

What happens if I get a flat tire or the bike has a mechanical issue?

Contact the shop directly if you experience a mechanical issue during your rental. Lock bikes securely whenever you stop at a tasting room or other destination.

Is parking available at the shop?

Yes — a free private parking lot is available on-site at 2948 San Marcos Ave.

Do I need to book in advance?

Booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially on weekends and during peak wine country season (April through November). The shop is open Thursday through Sunday, 10:00 AM–4:30 PM; closed Monday through Wednesday.

What time does the shop open and close?

Thursday through Sunday, 10:00 AM–4:30 PM. Closed Monday through Wednesday. All bikes must be returned by closing time.

Cancellation Policy

Due to a limited rental inventory, we have a 72-Hour cancellation policy on all rentals and tours. Rain-outs are the exception!
