Description

Molokini & Turtle Town Speed Raft Snorkel Adventure!

This isn’t your typical Maui snorkel trip—it’s a fast, high-energy ride to two of the island’s most legendary underwater destinations. Aboard the Makena Mele II, a brand-new 40-foot zodiac speed raft built in 2025, you’ll race across the morning ocean toward Molokini Crater, one of the most famous snorkeling locations in Hawaii. The powerful raft cuts down travel time so you spend less time getting there and more time floating above Molokini’s incredibly clear water, where hundreds of tropical fish, rays, and starfish move through the crater’s protected reef.
With a maximum of just 19 guests, the experience feels semi-private compared to larger snorkel boats. The small group size makes it easy to gear up quickly, slip into the water, and enjoy the reef without the crowds. Molokini is known for its remarkable visibility and diverse marine life, with more than 250 species of fish, colorful coral gardens, and the possibility of spotting moray eels or manta rays gliding below. It’s one of those places where every time you look down, something new catches your eye.
After exploring Molokini, the adventure continues to Turtle Town, where Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles (Honu) are often seen cruising through the reef. Along the way, take in sweeping views of Maui’s coastline and neighboring islands while your crew shares insights about the ocean and the wildlife you’re encountering. With the thrill of a zodiac raft ride, two incredible snorkel spots, and a small group atmosphere, this 3-hour tour packs a true Maui bucket-list experience into one unforgettable morning on the water.

FAQs

Why is snorkeling at Molokini and Turtle Town so exciting?

Snorkeling at Molokini Crater and Turtle Town combines two of Maui’s most famous underwater environments in a single trip, offering very different but equally unforgettable experiences. Molokini is a crescent-shaped volcanic crater that rises out of the ocean and forms a partially enclosed marine sanctuary. Because of its unique shape and protected waters, Molokini is known for exceptional underwater visibility—often reaching 100 feet (30 m) or more—which makes it one of the clearest snorkeling spots in Hawaii. The crater acts as a natural barrier against waves and currents, creating ideal conditions to observe coral gardens, reef formations, and large schools of tropical fish.

Turtle Town offers a completely different but equally exciting experience. Located along Maui’s southern coastline, this area is famous for its frequent sightings of Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu) resting and feeding among coral reefs and sea grass beds. Snorkelers often encounter turtles gliding slowly through the water or surfacing for air nearby. Because this area also supports thriving reef ecosystems, you’ll often see a wide variety of fish and marine life moving through the coral formations.

Together, these two destinations provide a well-rounded snorkeling adventure—one site known for crystal-clear crater snorkeling and another known for unforgettable turtle encounters—making it a true Maui bucket-list experience.

What wildlife might we encounter at Molokini and Turtle Town?

The waters surrounding Molokini Crater are home to more than 250 species of fish, making it one of Hawaii’s most biologically rich snorkeling areas. As you float above the reef, you may see brightly colored species such as yellow tang, parrotfish, butterflyfish, triggerfish, and Moorish idols weaving through coral formations. The reef also hosts moray eels, starfish, and a variety of invertebrates hiding among the coral structures.

At times, snorkelers may also spot larger marine life such as octopus, manta rays, or Hawaiian green sea turtles moving through deeper areas near the crater walls. While sightings vary each day, Molokini’s protected ecosystem supports an incredible amount of marine activity.

Turtle Town, as the name suggests, is well known for its resident population of Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu). These gentle animals are commonly seen swimming slowly along the reef or resting on the ocean floor. Alongside turtles, snorkelers frequently observe reef fish, octopus, rays, and coral communities that provide shelter for countless small marine creatures.

During the winter months (roughly December through April), humpback whales migrate through Maui’s waters and can sometimes be seen from the boat. Dolphins are also spotted in the area throughout the year. As with any wildlife experience, sightings can vary from day to day and are never guaranteed—but Molokini and Turtle Town are two of the best places in Maui to encounter marine life.

What should I do if I see turtles, dolphins, or other large marine life near me?

All Hawaiian sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act, which means it is important to observe them responsibly. Snorkelers must maintain a distance of at least 10 feet (3 m) from turtles at all times. It is illegal to touch, chase, ride, feed, or otherwise disturb them.

If a turtle approaches you while snorkeling, the best thing to do is remain calm and gently move yourself about 10 feet (3 m) away, giving the animal space to continue its natural behavior. Turtles are curious and may swim near snorkelers, but it’s important to avoid blocking their path or interfering with them.

The same respectful approach applies to other wildlife such as dolphins, seals, and whales. If these animals come close, calmly create space and enjoy the moment from a distance. Never attempt to chase, touch, feed, or harass marine life. Observing wildlife responsibly helps protect these species and ensures future visitors can enjoy these incredible encounters.

Can I bring a waterproof camera?

Yes, you are welcome to bring a waterproof camera or phone in a waterproof case to capture your experience. Molokini’s clear water and abundant marine life provide incredible photo opportunities, both above and below the surface.

However, it’s important to ensure your equipment is fully waterproof and securely attached to you. The ride to and from the snorkel sites can be fast and occasionally bumpy aboard the ocean raft, so cameras should be secured with a wrist strap or float attachment whenever possible.

Please note that you are responsible for your personal equipment. The crew cannot guarantee the safety of phones, cameras, or other electronics if they are lost or damaged during the trip.

What is the temperature of the water in Hawaii?

The ocean temperature around Maui generally ranges between 74–82°F (23–28°C) throughout the year. During the winter months, water temperatures are usually closer to 74–76°F (23–24°C), while late summer and early fall can reach 80–82°F (27–28°C).

Most guests find the water very comfortable for snorkeling, especially with Maui’s warm tropical climate. Some people prefer to wear a light rash guard or wetsuit top for additional warmth and sun protection during longer snorkeling sessions.

Can a woman snorkel on her period? Is there danger from sharks?

You can absolutely snorkel while on your period. The sharks are not a problem as it takes a LOT of blood to attract a shark. A bigger problem is that there is not a head (bathroom) on the boat, so it may be best to plan your snorkel carefully.

What kinds of sharks are in Hawaii and are they harmful?

The most common sharks you are likely to see on a snorkel off of Maui are White-tip reef sharks. They are not harmful at all and are beautiful and graceful to watch. On occasion we also see Grey Sharks, which are also great to watch and pose no threat to people. The Tiger Shark is the one that occasionally attacks swimmers, but has never been reported to harass people and in fact, when approached underwater, often turns and swims away. There are Hammerhead sharks at various parts of the island, but are not seen on trips at Molokini or the Makena Coast.

What is your safety record?

Oddly enough, we get asked about everything from sunscreen to tourist tips but rarely are we asked about our safety policies and record. We have been in the business for nearly 30 years and have an immaculate safety record. While having fun and exciting trips is a high priority, the safety of our guests is our number one priority.

What is the experience of your staff?

Most boat charter tours have a similar profile with some variations. What truly shapes your experience is the crew. Makena Coast Charters has been in business for over 30 years, and our crew excels in the water, with boat duties, and in customer service.

Can I bring my snorkel equipment to use on the tours?

Full face masks are NOT allowed. Of course you can use your snorkeling gear. Many people use their own mask, snorkel and fins, but there is no discount for bringing your snorkeling gear.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’

Can I snorkel with a mustache or beard?

You can snorkel with a beard or mustache but it can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before diving. If you’d prefer not to shave your mustache, please bring petroleum jelly or chapstick with you. If you coat your mustache in that chapstick or jelly, it may be able to seal and prevent water from getting in.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while snorkeling?

Glasses cannot be worn while snorkeling, but contacts are perfectly fine and recommended for the best experience. Prescription masks are not available for rent, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Additionally, there is an automatic correction effect that occurs underwater due to light refraction, making things appear clearer, but contacts or a personal prescription mask will provide the best visibility.
