Description

Descend to Maui’s 100-Foot Shipwreck, Then Explore the Reef!

Descend into deeper Maui waters to explore the Carthaginian, a 100-foot (30 m) steel-hulled shipwreck resting upright on the sandy seafloor at approximately 95 feet (29 m). Just a short boat ride from the dock, this artificial reef offers certified divers the chance to experience a completely different underwater environment from Maui’s shallower coastal reefs.

Your guide will lead you around the exterior of the wreck, where years beneath the Pacific have transformed the ship into habitat for marine life—including deeper-water tropical species that aren't commonly encountered closer to shore. You'll have plenty to explore around the hull and surrounding artificial reef while appreciating the scale of the wreck from multiple angles. There is no penetration of the Carthaginian, so the experience focuses entirely on exploring its exterior rather than entering enclosed spaces.

After your first dive, the adventure changes completely. Your second tank takes you to a shallower Maui reef, where you'll trade steel and deep water for tropical reef habitat. Keep watch for Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu), schools of colorful reef fish, and the occasional reef shark as you explore a different side of Maui’s underwater world.

Together, the two dives offer an excellent contrast: a deep-water shipwreck and artificial reef followed by a relaxed shallow reef dive. Carthaginian trips operate only on select dates and are dependent on suitable ocean conditions, so divers hoping to add one of Maui’s best-known wrecks to their logbook should plan ahead.

FAQs

What is the Carthaginian?

It's a steel-hulled replica of a 19th-century whaling ship that once sat in Lahaina Harbor as a museum piece before being intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef.

How deep is the wreck dive?

The wreck sits at approximately 95 feet (29 m).

Can I go inside the wreck?

No — this is a "diver safe" wreck dive with no penetration and no confined or enclosed spaces to navigate, so no wreck-specific certification is required.

What will the second dive be like?

The second dive is a shallower reef dive featuring turtles, tropical reef fish, and occasional reef sharks — a different pace and setting from the wreck.

Do you have DIN tanks?

Yes, we need 2 days advance notice.

Can I get nitrox? What blend Nitrox do you have? What percentage is the Nitrox?

Yes, we need 1 day advance notice. Nitrox blend is 32%

Would you recommend steel tanks (“100’s”) since I tend to go through my air fast?

It depends on your dimensions (height and weight) if it will be beneficial for you. If you are over 210 lbs we recommend steel tanks. Also known as “100’s”

Can I go to Hana the day after I dive?

Yes, there is no elevation gain to worry about.

Can I drive up to Haleakala (volcano)?

No, wait 18 – 24 hours before ascending to altitude.

Any activity that brings you above 1000 ft (305 m) can trigger the Bends/Decompression Sickness. Please check your hike elevation to ensure that at no time you will be going up in elevation. If the hike does go to elevation, you must treat it like a preflight interval as listed above in the flying FAQ.

Can I fly after diving?

Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:

  • A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000 ft (305 m) interval of 18 hours suggested.
  • Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 24 hours is suggested.
  • Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.

Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!

I have my own regulator can I just rent the BCD?

Yes; when you make your reservation you can select which add-ons are right for you: you can either rent a Full Set of dive gear or by the piece.

As of 2021 we are providing any gear rental you need for no extra charge.

Do I need my scuba certification card?

Yes, you need to show your scuba certification card at check in in order to participate in our Maui diving excursion. Proof of certification is accepted, for example, if the office has verified you or you have a Dive Check through PADI.

Can I bring my own tanks? Is there a discount if I do?

Yes, you can bring your own tanks. There is no discount as tanks do not cost extra, they are included.

Can I use all of my own equipment?

Yes, and you do need a computer on for boat dives.

Cancellation Policy

72 Hour Cancellation Policy strictly enforced. We run small groups intentionally. 5 divers to 1 guide means every seat matters. A last minute cancellation leaves us with an empty seat and a diver we've already sent elsewhere. When you give us your credit card information to hold a reservation, you are agreeing to the following cancellation terms and conditions:

If the cancellation notification is received more than 72 hours from the start of the tour or class there will be a 20% fee charged.

If the cancellation notification is received less than 72 hours from the start of the tour or class there will be a 100% cancellation fee charged to your credit card.

Cancellations only accepted during business hours: Monday to Saturday 7 AM to 4:30 PM, Sunday 7:30 AM to 3 PM (HST). Messages left on voicemail do not constitute an accepted cancellation.

If you are required to have a doctor's note for a "YES" answer on the medical waiver for any Intro to Scuba Dive or Certification class and you fail to bring that with you or provide it BEFORE the start of the class you WILL NOT be permitted to dive and you WILL NOT receive a refund for the booking. Additionally, if you cannot swim or for any other reason do not complete your dive you will not be given a refund.
