For a longer adventure, try the Maupin–Bakeoven–Shaniko out-and-back route through rolling high desert and historic towns. Other great options include the Grass Valley ride, the Hunt Park–Shadybrook Loop, and the Pine Hollow Loop. Each route showcases the natural beauty and charm of the region—perfect for exploring by E-bike.

Do you have any tips for riding an E-bike in Maupin?

Yes! Here are some helpful tips to keep your ride safe, comfortable, and fun:

  • Be mindful of your speed: E-bikes offer a powerful boost, so it’s important to adjust your speed based on the terrain, road conditions, and your experience level. Always maintain a speed that you can control, especially on gravel or winding roads.
  • Brake responsibly: Use both brakes evenly and avoid sudden braking, which can cause you to lose control—especially on loose or uneven surfaces.
  • Stay alert and aware: Keep your eyes on the road and scan ahead for traffic, wildlife, pedestrians, or other obstacles. Avoid distractions like using your phone while riding. Use your rear-view mirror to stay aware of traffic approaching from behind.
  • Know your cell coverage: Cell phone service can be limited outside of Maupin’s city center. Make sure your phone is fully charged before you ride and have a safety plan in place in case you lose signal.
  • Plan around weather conditions: Weather in this region can change quickly. Rain, wind, and heat can all impact your comfort and bike handling. Dress appropriately and be ready to modify your plans if needed.
  • Warm up before your ride: A quick warm-up with light aerobic exercise and some stretching can help you avoid injury and improve your ride performance.
  • Stay hydrated: Bring plenty of water and drink regularly—especially on warm days or longer rides. You can also purchase electrolyte supplements at the Gear Up Maupin showroom to help you stay balanced and energized.

Following these tips will help you enjoy your E-bike adventure safely while soaking in all the natural beauty Maupin has to offer.

Do I need to watch a safety video before renting an E-bike?

Yes. All renters are required to watch the E-bike safety video before your rental. This short video covers essential riding guidelines, safety tips, and how to properly operate your E-bike. Please watch it in full before your arrival so you're ready to ride safely and confidently.

Key reminders from the video:

  • Helmets are required and provided with your rental.
  • You must be at least 19 years old and bring a valid photo ID.
  • One rider per bike—passengers are not allowed.
  • You're strongly encouraged to wear high-visibility clothing, available for purchase in-store.
  • You must obey all traffic laws and ride safely at all times.

What should I know about riding safely on the roads around Maupin?

The roads around Maupin are shared with vehicles, rafting shuttles, and trucks, so please ride with caution and stay alert. All of our bikes are equipped with rear-view mirrors—use them often and keep an eye out for oncoming and passing traffic.

Additional safety tips:

  • Always park your bike fully off the road if you stop to enjoy the view or take photos.
  • Use your kickstand on stable ground to prevent tipping.
  • Lock your bike whenever it’s unattended—locks are available at Gear Up Maupin.
  • You are responsible for the care and security of your rental bike.

By following these safety practices and reviewing the safety video in advance, you’ll set yourself up for a safe, smooth, and unforgettable ride.

Is this experience kid-friendly?

Our E-bike rentals are best suited for adults and older teens. Renters must be at least 19 years old with a valid photo ID to rent and ride. For safety reasons, our bikes are single-rider only, and we do not offer child seats, trailers, or tandem options.

Do I need previous experience to go e-biking in Maupin?

No prior experience is required! Our E-bikes provide pedal assist to help you tackle hills and longer rides with ease. Before you head out, we’ll give you a quick orientation to get you comfortable with the bike’s controls.

What if the weather changes during my ride?

Maupin’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to dress in layers and be prepared for changing conditions. If severe weather hits, please ride cautiously and consider cutting your trip short for safety.
