Description

Kona Pelagic Black Water Night Dive - Advanced Certified Divers Only!

Only for the true scuba thrill-seeker, the Pelagic Night Dive is the ultimate bucket list dive! You will sink into the pitch black ocean waters that span 4000 ft (1200 m) under you, to hang, floating from a 50 ft (15 m) tether to the boat.
Located 2 to 3 miles (3 to 4 km) off the Kona coast, this is not a tour for the faint of heart! You will wait suspended and surrounded by darkness to see what swims by! Your dive lights tend to attract microscopic zooplankton, like moths to a porch light, and in turn, drawing in open ocean predators like jellyfish and squid.
Hang suspended in the blackness of the Pacific Ocean as you experience what only a few ever dream of seeing! Experience what only a few will ever dream of seeing on this Pelagic Night Dive! Although an experience of a lifetime, it is an extremely advanced dive and requires:

  • At least 50 logged dives
  • Must be Advanced Open Water Certified
  • Been diving within the last 6 months

Wildlife Guidelines

Turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins are all protected in Hawaii. Please remember to keep your distance and never touch, feed, harass, or chase any wildlife in the water. Calmly watch from a distance! Also, please be aware of your body placement and equipment when around the reefs and wrecks. There is fragile coral, and many wrecks are rusting and breaking down, therefore to avoid damaging them further, please don't knock into them!

FAQs

Are there any health, weight, or experience restrictions?
Most likely by this point in your certification, you've already been cleared to dive but if you've answered "YES" to any of the questions on the Medical Questionnaire, you will need to provide a physician's signed PADI Medical Statement and Guidelines for Recreational Scuba Divers Physical Examination prior to diving. If you have not consulted with a physician and have a signed document at the time of the dive, you will not be able to dive and the cost will not be refunded.
This is for solely certified divers. Divers must be Advanced Open Water certified with at least 50 logged dives, excellent buoyancy skills, been diving in the last 6 months, NO heart conditions, and be able to converse in English.
Prescription masks are available up to +3 and gear goes up to XXL. You must also be able to climb a stepladder that extends into the water to get back into the boat.
What if I don't have 50 dives?
This dive requires 50 logged dives in order to book, there are no exceptions. This is required for your safety as it takes extreme skill and experience to remain floating at depth, stay tethered without getting tangled, and to stay calm being surrounded by darkness.
Can I fly after diving? **ANY elevation above 1000FT (305m) is DANGEROUS
Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:
  • A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 12 hours suggested.
  • Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 18 hours is suggested.
  • Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.
Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!
DO NOT DRIVE BACK TO HILO OR SOUTH OF CAPTAIN COOK after diving! The roads enter unsafe elevations after diving so please treat driving to other parts of the island as you would a pre-flight surface interval.
Can I bring a camera?
You are welcome to bring a camera but it is your responsibility to ensure it is in a DIVE safe case. Pressure increases when you are diving down and although it doesn't feel all that different to you, it will impact your camera. To be safe, a case certified to 60 feet or 18 meters is a good idea!
GoPros for example have a specific clear dive housing that is rated to bring them to depth. The case must be more than just waterproof, also depth and pressure proof. The company is not responsible for any damaged or lost equipment.
Are there any camera recommendations for underwater photographers?
Most people bring a GoPro and guides are happy to take pictures of you with your own camera. If you are an underwater photographer, please feel free to contact others for recommendations. Macro lens with red lights and strobes is a basic suggestion but please research further into it before your scheduled dive!
What about sharks?
Sharks hunt at dusk and dawn and therefore rarely, if ever, seen on tours. They are simply wild animals that also share the ocean but most often people rarely see them. The most common sharks to spot are small reef sharks that prefer to immediately leave the presence of people and boats and tend to be harmless towards people.
