We’re still buzzing from our latest paddle adventure with Meraki Mountain Adventures—a half-day SUP tour on Electra Lake, just outside of Durango, CO. This one felt extra special, not just because of the epic views and cold-water cliff jumps, but because it’s one of those secret spots that most people think they can’t access.

The Beta on Electra Lake

Locals usually assume Electra Lake is off-limits—private, inaccessible, a no-go. But here’s the scoop: it’s not private. You just need a $26 day pass and a solid guide who knows the ins and outs. Enter Colin Courtney of Meraki Adventures. Colin has a permit to run paddle tours on the lake, and lucky for us, he invited our team out for the ride.

A Morning of Clean Gear & Easy Paddling

We left Durango around 9 a.m. to meet Colin at the entrance. The lake is managed by the local electric company, and they’re serious about keeping invasive species out—every board, paddle, and life jacket gets a deep clean before it hits the water. While the boards were getting scrubbed, we swapped stories with Colin and soaked in the morning sun.

Then it was game on. After a quick paddle demo (including paddle height setup and tips on stance), we launched from the south side of the lake with mellow downwind conditions and jaw-dropping views of the Hermosa Cliffs, Engineer Mountain, and the Needles Range.

Island-Hopping, Cliff Jumping, and Cold Plunges

We made our way to a small island to regroup. Colin gave us a choice—cruise nearby for a chill day or send it to the far side of the lake for a little Type 2 fun. Naturally, we opted to send it. The reward? Cliff jumping, icy blue water, and big grins all around.

After the plunge, we paddled to another island, huddled in the sun, and let our bodies warm up while we snacked and shared stories. It was one of those pause-the-world moments.

Paddling Back Into the Wind

The trip back was no joke—about two miles upwind. A few of us switched to seated paddling for better balance and power. When Sage started struggling, Colin rigged a tow line and paddled her board back kayak-style. The wind made it tough, but we all wanted a good workout—and we definitely got one.

By the time we hit the boat ramp again, we were wiped in the best way possible. Sun-kissed, wind-tested, and stoked.

Why We Loved Meraki Adventures

Colin’s not just a guide—he’s a steward of the outdoors. His deep connection to nature shines through everything he does, from gear prep to teaching Leave No Trace. With a background that spans Alaska to Tanzania, he brings soul, knowledge, and intention to every trip. The trips are extremely inclusive as they’re kid-friendly, dog-friendly, and beginner-friendly. Colin’s mission is fully aligned with TripOutside’s values of helping everyone get outside.

Post-Paddle Fuel Stop

We wrapped the day at The Nugget for a well-earned meal from the Backcountry Gourmet food truck—local eats with a view of the mountains we’d just paddled beneath. Perfect end to a perfect day.
