Maui Windsurfing Overview

Bar none, Maui is one of the most popular destinations in the world to practice watersports that harness the power of makani (wind). With an impressive backdrop of the Sun Gate (Haleakala) and the West Maui Mountains, you can combine the thrills of surfing and sailing into one with Maui windsurfing. If you are new or a seasoned windsurfer, don’t worry. There are Maui windsurfing lessons and Maui windsurfing rental for all levels of skill.

Why Maui Windsurfing is Great

With steady trade winds and warm, shallow waters, Maui is a windsurfer’s paradise. The Central Valley of the island funnels the trade wind to create ideal conditions for windsurfing. Whether you prefer a protected cove or an extreme reef break, Maui has a perfect windsurfing spot for all levels of windsurfers.  Maui nō ka ‘oi (Maui is the best)!

Where to Windsurf in Maui

There are three major Maui windsurfing beaches. All are located on the North Shore. Before you go, make sure you select the best Maui windsurfing beach for your level of skill.

Kanaha Beach Park

With gentle waves, views of the West Maui Mountains, and a protected area, Kanaha Beach Park is an ideal place for Maui windsurfing lessons and for all beginners. Kanaha Beach Park is right next to the OGG airport.

Spreckelsville Beach

Spreckelsville Beach (aka Sprecks) is located just off the Hana Highway just a few minutes drive from the Kahului Airport. It is less crowded than Kanaha; however, this area can be a bit choppy. Sprecks is recommended for intermediate windsurfers.

Ho‘okipa Beach

Ho‘okipa Beach is a beautiful beach and cove that has a well-shaped wave. Surfers, kiteboarders, and expert windsurfers flock to Ho‘okipa. This is only for very seasoned windsurfers, but don’t be afraid to come and park at the overlook with a picnic. You can learn a lot about the sport by watching it.

When to go Windsurfing in Maui

The summer months of May through September have the best, consistent trade winds on the North Shore beaches. However, Maui does have two seasons: windy and wavy. The wavy season is in the winter months on the North Shore. Many times during this season the South Shore experiences Kona winds from the South making Kihei and Ka‘anapali hot spots for windsurfing as well. A good rule of thumb is to pay attention to the Maui windsurfing report.

Additionally, there is an 11 am rule across the island. Windsurfers share the ocean with fishermen, divers, and others; so, out of respect for all, windsurfers, kiteboarders, and other sail sports refrain from sailing until after 11 am.

Getting to Maui

There are direct flights from various domestic airports to Kahului, Maui (OGG) airport. From the West Coast of the United States, the flight time is a little over five hours. If your favorite airport doesn’t have a direct flight, you can also book a flight to Honolulu and take a short, second leg of only forty minutes to Kahului, Maui. It is wise to rent a car while in Maui as it is one of the largest of the Hawaiian Islands with many interesting adventures that require a vehicle to get to the best Maui windsurfing beaches.

Maui Windsurfing FAQs

When is the best time of year for Maui windsurfing?

May through September are the best months. With consistent trade winds for the North Shore beaches, you are bound to nail epic windsurfing conditions. However, nearly any time of year, if you pay attention to the Maui windsurfing report, you can find the wind and the waves.

When can you windsurf in Maui?

As respect to the Hawaiian culture and the roles both the ‘āina (land) and kai (ocean) play in the community, the windsurfer, kiteboarder, and other sail sports have agreed to wait until after 11 am to sail. This allows fishermen, divers, and families to enjoy the beaches with tranquility.
