Aspen Biking Overview

In summertime, Aspen becomes a popular destination for biking enthusiasts. When the snow melts, the mountains entire 3000-vertical feet reveals almost 350 miles of biking trails. This includes plenty of easy, paved pathway for laid-back cruiser bike adventures!

Whatever brings you to this sophisticated and charming mountain destination, you can find an excuse for a relaxed cruiser ride around town. Cruiser or city bikes can be a wonderful way to travel between the town’s many bars, restaurants, and shops. With beautiful scenery, delightful weather, and your choice of gentle, paved Aspen bike trails, it’s time to grab your Aspen bike path map and hit the road!

Why City Biking in Aspen is Great

Cruiser bikes are a wonderful way to take your time and feel the wind in your hair while exploring this fun little mountain town. Here’s what we love about Aspen bike trips!

Plenty of Paved Trails

While we respect Aspen as a mountain biking destination, this cool town refuses to be pigeonholed. There are plenty of paved paths that make it easy to see a lot of the surrounding area on a cruiser bike. You don’t need gears and grit to experience the beauty of the Rockies here!

Bike Parking Is Easy

Aspen is a popular place and parking cars can become a daunting task on popular summer days and evenings. With Aspen bike rentals, you can cruise around town and easily stop whenever you want. This freedom to see the sites is one of our favorite things about cruiser biking Aspen!

The Town Is Part of The Draw

Aspen has world-class dining, shopping, and drinking. While it’s also the gateway to some incredible scenery and remarkable outdoor adventure, we think the town itself is worth exploring. You can create a cruiser bike itinerary for several days with all the cultural quality offered in Aspen.

Where to Find Easy Bike Paths Aspen, CO

You don’t have to shred singletrack if you come to this gorgeous mountain town – there are plenty of mellow bike rides near Aspen that are perfect for a cruiser bike.  From the Aspen bike path on the river to the trail between Snowmass and Aspen, there are plenty of places to bike in Aspen!

Rio Grande Bike Trail Aspen

A crown jewel of relaxed biking in Aspen, the Rio Grande Trail is a 42-mile bike path from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. This path is a rails-to-trails project that follows the former corridor of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.  The Rio Grande trail is unpaved from Aspen until Woody Creek Tavern, which is about the halfway point. The unpaved portion is certainly still comfortable on a cruiser bike and the remaining half of the trail is paved all the way to Basalt. The trail is also plowed in the winter when there is more than 3 inches of snow, so you can even go for a bundled-up winter cruiser ride!

ABC Trail

For another mellow bike path, Aspen’s paved ABC Trail is a great choice. Perfect for cruiser bikes and riders of all ages, the 2.5 mile trail runs from the Aspen Airport Business Center (the trail is sometimes called the AABC Trail) to the West End neighborhood of Aspen, where you can connect it with the Cemetery Lane Trail and then on to the Rio Grande Trail. The ABC Trail parallels busy Highway 82 but it’s been effectively landscaped so the riding is still fun!

Owl Creek Trail

The paved Owl Creek Trail is a more wooded experience – a great way to get into the Aspen trees if you’re lucky enough to be in town when the leaves change. The Owl Creek Trail runs almost six miles between Snowmass Village and Aspen. There is some significant elevation gain over the course of the entire trail, so doing the whole thing might be tough on a cruiser – but you can certainly do a portion of it!

When to Go on Bike Rides Near Aspen

Aspen is an amazing hub for adventure, but it can also be pricier compared to other Colorado destinations so it pays to plan ahead. The prime months for visiting Aspen are from December to March and prices are higher during this time. It’s also not necessarily the best time for biking. Aspen tends to be more popular in the winter months because of the incredible ski/snowboard resorts in Aspen and the surrounding towns.

Opting for a summer trip means you can visit the Aspen bike shops with less crowds, spend a little less money, and enjoy mild, sunny weather. Summer temperatures at this altitude rarely go above 80 degrees during the day, and evenings remain cool. Better yet, try to catch Aspen in the shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall – great temperatures and good weather, but less summer vacationers.

Getting to Aspen

Aspen has its own tiny airport and while flying directly into town is often the most convenient choice, it’s also very expensive because the airport is so small. The flight from DIA to Aspen takes less than one hour and there are usually 4 flights per day.

Most travelers arrive to Aspen via Denver International Airport, rent a car, and drive a little under 4 hours to the resort town. There are also numerous shuttle options to Aspen from DIA and Denver’s Grand Central Station.

Other arrival airports include Eagle County Airport near Vail, which is about 65 miles and an hour drive to Aspen (depending on traffic), and Grand Junction Regional Airport, a little over two hour’s drive from Aspen.
