Surfing Lessons

Surfing lessons in Waikiki are customized to fit any experience level and learning style. They are crafted individually for the beginning surfer who wants to test the waters for the very first time, for the intermediate surfer looking to improve on fundamentals or take on more challenging waves and maneuvers, and for the advanced professional level surfer who is on the search for a competitive edge or simply to push themselves to their own personal limits.

The surfing lessons for beginners will teach you the basic elements of the sport to get you up and riding —surfing etiquette, water safety, body positioning, board handling and positioning, paddling, and getting up on your feet.

For advanced students, the instruction takes on a refined direction that matches your riding style — correcting ‘bad habits’, identifying strengths and weaknesses in technique, competitive strategies, and surfing bigger waves.

Most importantly, all students will receive instruction that acknowledges the mental, emotional, and spiritual elements that make surfing such a unique and beautiful sport. You’ll learn how to connect with the ocean environment, understand the line up and the actions of surfers around you, and surf to express your personality.

SUP Lessons

Just like our surfing lessons, our SUP instruction follows an intuitive methodology that will have you up and paddling in no time. Team Ohana offers individual private lessons, as well as group instruction, that will teach you the basic and advanced techniques that have made this sport so popular with the casual and competitive alike.

If you like to surf, you’ll love to paddleboard. And OSP is ready with the equipment and instruction to make it happen.  Expect each lesson to be customized to your skill level.

Bodyboarding Lessons

If standing up on a board isn’t your thing, try Waikiki bodyboarding lessons. It is one of the easiest watersports to get into, tons of fun and there is much more to it than simply riding a board on your stomach.

Our instructors will teach you techniques, tricks, and methods that will allow you to ride the waves like a pro. From the beginner to advanced, we have you covered!  Expect each lesson to be customized to your skill level.

Lesson Types

Private Lessons

The private lesson offers more attention, more assistance, more flexibility … a great option for young children, non-swimmers, special needs, and those who have moved beyond the beginner surf lesson.

Your accomplished surfing instructor will focus on you and you alone – your talents, strengths and weaknesses, goals and experience. This is the perfect lesson for those who would like to take their surfing to the next level. This level of instruction is designed for students who may be hesitant to try surfing or may require more assistance. We specialize in helping students of all shapes, sizes and abilities experience the love of surfing.

Private lessons are great for beginner surfers who want personalized one on one instruction, children, those with special needs and intermediate surfers and are available for all ages. To improve affordability, we have created an exclusive private group option for friends or family that want to join the student during the lesson.  Private lessons are available for both one (1) hour and two (2) hour sessions.

Group Lessons

One surfer is enough. Two surfers is an occasion. Three surfers is a party. Team Ohana’s open group lesson option is an affordable way to bring friends together or to make new ones.  Our open group lessons offer that perfect mix of individual attention in a team environment. Everyone improves and everyone has fun.

With a low student-to-teacher ratio and low rates, our group surfing lessons are perfect for the solo traveler or for classmates, roommates, staff team-building, or memorable events. All you need to bring is yourself and your enthusiasm — we’ll do the rest.

The group lesson is a great option for the beginner surfer. Students must be at least 13 years of age and older and must be able to swim. Our open group lesson sizes vary and are a ratio of 1 instructor for every 4 students. All instructors in the group lesson work together to maximize safety and fun.

Family Lessons

Develop hidden talent. Strengthen the bonds between families. Encourage personal discipline. Teach lasting commitment. And do it all through a simple but exhilarating connection with the ocean environment. There are few activities that offer genuine life-changing experiences for the entire family quite like surfing. Give them the opportunity to experience the joys of surfing and your Ohana will thank you long after the boards have been stored.

And to help offset the expenses of bringing the whole family to Hawaii, we’ve created a family package that’s affordable, safe, and fun for everyone. The family lesson must include one parent and one child who is 12 years old and under, with the option to add additional family members. Family lessons are available for both one (1) hour and two (2) hour sessions.

Professional Lessons

For those surfers that love what they do and are ready to do it at a higher level, Team Ohana’s professional lessons are the natural choice. We’re talking about advanced instruction in the art of surfing, stand-up paddling, or body boarding and delivered by accomplished teachers dedicated to maximizing your potential. Keep in mind that professional lessons are not just for professionals or competition surfers. The pro surfers of Ohana Surf Project will create a personalized instruction plan designed to enhance your skills, keep you safe in the water, and maximize your enjoyment of the sport you love. And, if you end up taking first prize in your next competition — well, that’s ok, too. Professional lessons are appropriate for all skill levels — particularly for intermediate and advanced surfers working to improve technique or those considering competitive participation. Professional lessons are available for surfing, stand-up paddling, and body boarding in 90-minute or 2 and 1/2 -hour lessons that include a 15-minute pre-lesson briefing and a 15-minute post-lesson debriefing.

If on the rare occasion there is a reason for us to cancel due to the conditions, OSP will inform you at the earliest convenience and either reschedule or cancel at a full refund.

Q How many people are in a group lesson?

Our open group lesson sizes vary and have a ratio of 1 instructor for every 4 students. In addition, we always have an extra instructor in the water taking photos & assisting. The instructors work together & all students will have lots of opportunities to catch waves.

Q Is OSP closed during the holidays?

No. They're open 365 days a year.

Q What's the benefit of taking a private lesson vs a group lesson?

The private lesson allows for more one on one attention from the instructor, more assistance in general, more assistance paddling out, the opportunity to catch more waves, the opportunity to surf further out than the group lesson and work on progressing your skills, etc.

Q Where is the shop located?

The team surfs out in front of Queen’s Surf Beach at a surf location called Publics. In Google Maps GPS 2699 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815, or on Apple Maps GPS 2709 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu, HI 9615. This is located between the Honolulu Zoo & the Aquarium, across from Kapiolani Park, near lifeguard stand 2F & the Barefoot Beach Café. To find us look for our Surf School Bus™ vehicles, our Black Mercedes Sprinter van, and the OSP tent set up in the beach park.

Q Where should I go for rental meet ups?

Meet up with the OSP team at Queen’s Surf Beach. In Google Maps GPS 2699 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815, or on Apple Maps GPS 2709 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu, HI 9615. To find them, look for the Surf School Bus™ vehicles, a Black Mercedes Sprinter van, and the OSP tent set up in the beach park. For all rentals, OSP requires a credit card for security deposit and must be arranged with the office. Rental hours are from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm daily. All rentals are first come first serve. Q Where do you take students to surfing?

The regular surfing location is by Queen’s Surf Beach, across from Kapiolani Park, in between the Honolulu Zoo & the Aquarium. The surf spot is called Publics. We are able to teach all levels at this location. If a more experienced student desires to surf elsewhere this can possibly be arranged ahead of time for an added fee, dependent on our schedule and conditions.

Q Can we bring our own boards?

You may bring your own equipment. There is no discount for bringing your own equipment. Often, OSP will recommend using their equipment over your own since one of our boards may be better for what you are working on, however OSP will make sure to discuss the options with you.

If you would like to use their complimentary Waikiki shuttle & want to bring along your surfboard please inform the team at least 24-hours in advance if you want to arrange a pick up for additional equipment, this way, the team can make arrangements to bring your equipment in the van as well. If you are booking last minute or same day as your lesson, OSP may not have the ability to bring anything extra in their complimentary Waikiki shuttle.

Q What type of boards do OSP offer?

For surf boards, we have NSP hard tops from 11ft to 6’8, 12ft soft tops & hard tops, plus they have Channel Island short boards, fun boards, and performance longboards. For stand up paddle boards, they have 9’8, 10’2 & 11ft NSP’s. For body boards, they have Triads in various sizes & BullyBoards.

Q Can I use the boards after the lessons?

Yes, you may RENT the board after the lesson if the boards are available.

Q Can my child below 13 join lessons?

Yes, they can as long as they avail of the private, one-on-one lessons first.

For safety reasons only students 13 years and older may join our Open Group Lesson. The family package was designed to be more affordable for families with young children while still maintaining the highest level of safety. The family package does require that mom and/or dad accompany the young kid(s) in the water. If you feel your child will need to be on the surfboard with the instructor (aka tandem surf lesson) then you will need to sign them up for a private lesson. Often children 2-6 years old feel most comfortable doing a tandem lesson for the first time.

Q I can't swim, can I take a surfing lesson?

The team can certainly take you surfing. For safety, non-swimmers are required to take a private lesson one on one. To join the Open Group Lesson, students must be able to swim comfortably in the ocean without assistance or a lifejacket. OSP has life jackets available that non-swimmers may wear for their comfort during the lesson.

Q I have a disability - can I take the lessons?

Yes, you can take a surf lesson. If the disability requires extra attention, you will need to take a private lesson. If the disability makes it difficult to walk to the pick up location, OSP can also arrange a special pick up.

Q I don't speak English well, is that okay?

Yes, it is okay, instructors are accustomed to working with non-english speakers. Instructors use visual aids to help explain surfing.

OSP has instructors who speak Japanese, Korean and Spanish and the rest know what we call ‘surf instruction’ Japanese, Spanish, Korean, Sign Language, plus surf instruction basics in multiple languages.

Q Are there age restrictions?

No, we can teach all ages. We require that children under 13 are on a private lesson one on one or with their parents on a family package. If the students are young children, around 6 years old and under they will often need to be on the board with the instructor (tandem lesson), and this will be a private lesson. If the students are around 70 or older and feel they need the extra attention, a private lesson is advisable.

Q Can I reschedule my lesson?

You may reschedule your lesson at any time, however rescheduling within the same day of your lesson may be subject to a rescheduling fee. If you cancel your rescheduled lesson you may be subject to a cancellation fee.

Q What is the cancellation policy?

Customers will receive a full refund with 48 hours notice of cancellation during our high traffic seasons* and/or when OSP specifies, and OSP offers 24 hours notice of cancellation during the rest of the year. Large group bookings may be informed of a 72 hour cancellation policy. Please contact OSP by phone to cancel or inquire about rescheduling. No-shows will be charged the full price. Rescheduling within the same day of your lesson may be subject to a rescheduling fee, and same-day rescheduled lessons are no longer eligible for refunds once rescheduled.

*High traffic season dates = June 15th to August 31st / Thanksgiving week / December 15th to January 5th / Spring Break weeks between middle of March to end of April.

Q What if I'm late for the lesson or the hotel pick up?

If you are going to be late for the lesson or the pick up, please call OSP as soon as possible and they can always start your lesson late. If they are picking you up, they can send the driver back to get you after the other pick ups.

Q Does OSP provide transportation?

OSP picks up from 5 locations in Waikiki (the Ilikai Hotel, the Ambassador Hotel, Don Ho Lane Van Depot, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Waikiki Beach Marriot). The locations are within a few blocks of most hotels in Waikiki. OSP keeps their pick ups limited to these locations as much as possible to keep things running as smoothly & timely as possible.

Q Can I get picked up from my hotel (other than the 5 locations)?

The transportation picks up from 5 locations to minimize the amount of delays & possible mistakes. If there is a good reason to pick you up directly from your hotel, then OSP may do so with 24 hours advance notice. If your request is within 24 hours please call and they will check with the manager to see if they can arrange this for you.

Q I have friends and family who wants to accompany me but they're not joining the lessons. Can they ride in the van?

Extra riders may come along for no extra charge, however if the van is full, they will come back and pick up the extra riders after getting the surfers to their lesson.

Q My children are under 18, can I send them to lessons unaccompanied?

Yes, they can pick your teenage children up and take them to and from the lesson unaccompanied. Parents or guardians need to sign the waiver form ahead of time online or at the van when OSP picks the children up. Children 12 & under should be accompanied by a guardian. Guardians do not need to go in the water or stay on the beach, but must be there at the beginning and the end of the lesson.

Q What is included in the lesson?

OSP provides a long sleeve surf shirt and protective reef shoes to wear during the lesson, the equipment is provided and an instructor will be with you for the entirety of the lesson time. Tax, photos, and gratuity are NOT included. They also have life jackets available, but are not required or recommended unless necessary.

Q What can I bring to the lesson?

You will want to arrive wearing a bathing suit, and please bring a towel & sunscreen. The instructors are able to lock your items up safely so you may bring your valuables and whatever you need: wallet, phone, camera, change of clothes, etc. You may want to bring along extra money for photos or gratuity. If you are getting a pick up and needing to bring larger items, please inform the team ahead of time as there may not be room in the van.

Q How far in advanced should I make a reservation?

Lessons occasionally fill up ahead of time, so the sooner the better.

During the high traffic season* OSP recommends making your bookings further in advance since they more frequently fill up ahead of time.

*High traffic season dates = June 15th to August 31st / Thanksgiving week / December 15th to January 5th / Spring Break weeks between middle of March to end of April.

Q Can I wear my prescription glasses or contact lenses during the lessons?

You are certainly able to wear contact lenses, but the instructors do not recommend wearing prescription glasses. You can lose your contact lenses in the water, but as long as you keep your eyes closed underwater it is not a huge risk. You may wear prescription goggles. If you cannot see well without your glasses it is okay, you can still take the lesson.

Q I'm a lady and it's the time of the month. Can I still go surfing?

Yes, you may opt to wear a tampon. You won't attract sharks.

Q I have my own GoPro camera, can I take it to the lesson?

Anything you take in the water is at your own risk. OSP does not recommend it, but if you do decide to bring a camera with you, you will want to ensure that it can float and attach to you in some way that doesn’t interfere with the ability to paddle. A secure zipper pocket may work if you do not have another method.

Q I get sea sick, can I go surfing?

Yes, you still can. Make sure to drink an anti-sickness remedy ahead of time.

Q I'm scared of sharks. Do I need to be worried?

No, sharks are not a concern. The team understands the fear, but it is highly improbable to see a shark, let alone be attacked by one. Statistically speaking, you are more likely to be struck by lightning twice or hit on the head by a coconut than you are to be attacked by a shark. The area instructors take the students for surfing is over reef where an adult human can stand with their head and shoulders above water. These shallow waters are not where sharks tend to be found or even like to swim as they like to stay further out in deeper waters. Sharks will also not attack a human on purpose as we are not a food source that they are interested in which is why it is very rare to be attacked.

Q Should I be worried of jellyfish and other sea creatures?

No, it is very unlikely to be stung by jellyfish or anything else in the water for that matter. You may occasionally see sea turtles, seals, and other small fish in the surf area. It is possible, but very rare to encounter jelly fish & even rarer to see sharks. If you’re lucky you’ll see dolphins further out or whale jumping on the horizon during winter season. Occasionally, you may encounter bees drowning in the ocean, if you are allergic to bees do inform the instructors ahead of time.

Q Do I tip the instructors?

Gratuity is up to you. A standard tip of 15-20% is the standard but it's often up to you how much you'd give.

Q Do you take photos?

Yes, we do.
