Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. Enjoy their company if they approach from a distance and calmly move away from them if in their path.

FAQs
What can I see while canoeing in Kailua Bay, Oahu?
Canoeing in Kailua Bay gives you a front-row seat to one of Oahu’s most scenic marine environments. The bay features shallow coral reef systems where you may spot Hawaiian green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), yellow tangs (Zebrasoma flavescens), parrotfish, and moorish idols. Occasionally, Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) pass through the area. The crystal-clear water also offers views of sandy bottoms, lava rock formations, and the scenic backdrop of the Koʻolau Mountains.
What is special about Na Mokulua?
Na Mokulua—Moku Nui (north island) and Moku Iki (south island)—are volcanic offshore islets designated as Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuaries. Moku Nui is accessible to the public, while Moku Iki is fully protected. These islets are nesting grounds for native seabirds like the wedge-tailed shearwater (Ardenna pacifica) and Bulwer’s petrel (Bulweria bulwerii). Moku Nui also features a pocket beach, tidepools, and lava rock shelves, making it an ideal spot for observing native wildlife and geology.
What wildlife can I see on Na Mokulua?
On and around Moku Nui, you can see:
- Wedge-tailed shearwaters nesting in burrows from spring through fall.
- Hawaiian monk seals (Neomonachus schauinslandi), a critically endangered species, often resting on the beach (do not approach).
- Green sea turtles swimming along the reef edges. Intertidal life like ‘a‘ama crabs (Grapsus tenuicrustatus), ‘opihi (Cellana spp.), and nerite snails.
- Nearshore snorkeling reveals reef species like convict tangs (Acanthurus triostegus), threadfin butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga), and Hawaiian dascyllus (Dascyllus albisella).
Why take a Hawaiian Traditional Canoeing Tour instead of kayaking?
A traditional Hawaiian canoe (waʻa) is more than just transportation—it’s a cultural experience. You’ll paddle or sail with trained local guides who share the Polynesian voyaging traditions, explain ancient navigational techniques, and discuss the role of the waʻa in Hawaiian history. Unlike kayaking, where you’re often on your own, canoe tours are group-oriented, stable in rougher waters, and ideal for learning about Hawaiian mo‘olelo (stories), ocean stewardship, and the cultural significance of the offshore islets. Plus, sailing on a waʻa with a Hawaiian crab-claw sail connects you directly with the ancient explorers who first crossed the Pacific.
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.
Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
