Please also be respectful of any marine animals including but not limited to turtles, rays, sharks, seals, and dolphins. Please never chase, harass, feed, or TOUCH any of the marine species. FAQs
Do I need boating experience or a boat captain’s license?
No experience, specific skills, or licenses are required to pilot your Mini Boat. This excursion is suitable for everybody, from the age of 6 to… no limit on the other side! However, the person you choose from your party to drive the Mini Boat must be 18 years or older.
Our tour route is located within the Fajardo Roadstead, where the waters are sheltered and usually calm. At times we may ride in open water where, although usually calm, the sea can get choppy. Therefore, we strongly recommend guests with neck or back problems to not participate in this excursion and consider other tours we offer. Pregnant women cannot participate in this excursion.
Is it difficult to get in and out the Mini Boat for snorkeling?
When we say that we’ve got you covered, we mean it! Each Mini Boat is equipped with an easily manageable step ladder. Just find it in the storage compartment, attach it to the side of the boat, and voilá! You are all set to get in and out of your Mini Boat at will. Our guides will show you everything you need to know about your Mini Boat during the pre-ride instruction, and will be always available to assist you with everything you need in the water.
How safe are these boats?
Our Mini Boats cannot sink or capsize, and they meet stringent safety regulations. Both the Mini Boats and their safety equipment are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources. It is very unlikely that you will fall off our Mini Boats. Nevertheless, all boat drivers wear a “kill cord” bracelet that shuts off the engine instantly should they fall in the water.
An experienced, professionally-trained guide leads the tour and ensures that you have a safe and comfortable ride. Each tour guide is a licensed boat captain, thoroughly trained in safety procedures including CPR, first aid, and marine rescue.
What about valuables, do you provide storage?
Absolutely! We can provide secure inland storage for any valuables you may want to leave behind while Mini Boating.
Can I bring a camera?
You are welcome to bring your water-proof camera or phone in a case, but remember it is your responsibility to ensure it is in a waterproof case. It is suggested to use a bright floating attachment and not put at risk big SLR cameras and non-waterproof cameras! The boat ride can be fast and bumpy, so please ensure it is strapped to you and fully waterproof, even on the boat ride itself. We are not responsible if you lose or damage your equipment!
There is no separate photo package offered by the company. If you want to be sure to have pictures and videos of the experience, please plan to bring your own waterproof camera! The guides do their best to take some photos of the guests on the tour. Photos will then be emailed, a few days after the tour, to you as a free gift/thank you for coming along on the tour!
What is the boat capacity?
There are only 3 guests allowed per boat. The maximum weight limit is 300 lbs per person (136 kg) and 650 lbs (295 kg) per boat. Children 6 years and older are welcome on the boat but there must be an adult accompanying minors and the captain must be 18 years or older.
Can I bring my service dog?
Yes, the tour is service dog friendly, they will count against the weight requirement for the boat and if they are fairly large, they will count as a guest on the boat. They will need to have a life vest (we can provide one), their kit for clean-up / 'accidents' and be well behaved. It's important to note the mini boats jump around a fair bit since they're small/inflatable watercraft. It's important to know you will need to brace yourself with hands, knees and legs for the impacts, so the service dog should be able to handle these situations calmly.
What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?
Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.
Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’
Are there sharks?
Shark incidents in Puerto Rico’s waters are extremely rare, and serious injuries are even rarer. When you enter the ocean, it’s important to remember that it’s a natural, wild environment with many types of marine life, including sharks. Although the chances of a shark-related injury are very low, they are still part of the ocean’s ecosystem, and the ocean should be approached with respect. By learning about sharks and following safety guidelines, you can minimize even this small risk.
Can I snorkel if I wear glasses?
Standard eyeglasses can’t be worn with a snorkel mask, but prescription masks are available for those who need vision correction while snorkeling. If you’re interested, consider looking into a prescription mask option before your tour. Alternatively, contact lenses can be worn under a snorkel mask, though it’s best to close your eyes if water enters to prevent losing a lens.
Can you go underwater with a snorkel?
Yes, snorkels allow you to breathe with your face in the water at the surface. If you’d like to dive down, though, water will enter the snorkel, so you’ll need to hold your breath until you resurface. Once back at the surface, you can clear the snorkel by blowing out the air in your mouth hard. That should clear the snorkel, but if it doesn’t, tread the water, remove the snorkel from your mouth, and dump the mouthpiece out.
