FAQs
WHAT IS WHITE WATER STAND-UP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP)?
Whitewater stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is an adventurous form of paddleboarding that involves navigating rapids and turbulent river waters. Unlike traditional flatwater SUPs, whitewater SUP use specially designed boards that are shorter, wider, and more durable to handle rough conditions. Paddlers wear safety gear like personal flotation devices, helmets, and sometimes additional protective equipment. They use techniques like bracing and ferrying to maintain balance and control in dynamic environments. Whitewater Paddleboarding in Moab combines the skills of paddleboarding with the excitement of whitewater sports like rafting, making it a popular choice for visitors seeking a fun and challenging experience on the Colorado River.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I FALL OFF?
At the beginning of the day, your guides will teach you the easiest way to get back on your board. Because the Colorado River has deep, warm water, falling off can actually be fun! Once you are already wet and you know how to get back on the board, you’ll be more confident to try new things while you’re paddling. It’s all part of the experience!
IS PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE OR FITNESS REQUIRED?
No previous experience is required! These crafts have a short learning curve, and most beginners pick up the basics right away, making SUP a great option for all ages and skill levels. Paddlers should be prepared for an active adventure and in generally good health.
WHAT DO WE DO WITH OUR KEYS AND CLOTHES?
After gearing up at the shop, you will use your car as your locker, leaving any valuables behind that you don’t want to lose on the river. We’ll hold on to your keys at the shop. You’re welcome to bring a towel and set of dry clothes in the van that we take to the river.
CAN I BRING MY PHONE?
We don’t recommend bringing anything on the river that you don’t want to lose. While some guests may wish to bring their phone, we recommend leaving it back at the shop and enjoying the day on the river without worrying about dropping it.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GO?
SUP trips are offered daily April through October, and you can’t go wrong no matter when you come! During the summer months (June-August), the weather is typically warm and sunny, and the water is extremely pleasant and warm, but the area tends to be a bit busier during these times. During the shoulder season (April, May, September, and October) the crowds die down and there may be greater chances of seeing wildlife, but the weather can be variable and the water temperature is colder.
DO WE STILL PADDLE IF IT’S RAINING?
Typically if it is raining, windy, cloudy, or hot we still go out on the river. However, if we deem the water conditions for the day dangerous we reserve the right to reschedule.
WHAT ARE THE GROUP SIZES, AND CAN SOLO PADDLERS JOIN?
While we can have a maximum of 30 guests, group sizes tend to be smaller for SUP trips. For every four guests, there is one guide on the water, ensuring there is plenty of support and instruction no matter the group size. Our minimum is two guests, but if you are traveling solo, you are welcome to sign up and we will add you to a group at the specified time. If you are the only person to sign up, you will have the option to turn your trip into a private lesson for the cost of two guests.
SHOULD WE TIP OUR GUIDE?
While not expected, if you had a great experience, gratuities are always highly appreciated.
