Description

Explore the Reefs & Cayos of Fajardo, Puerto Rico - Mixed Groups of Certified Divers & Snorkelers Welcome!

Start your day exploring the colorful underwater world just off the coast of Fajardo, Puerto Rico. This guided 2-tank boat dive takes you to some of the region’s best shallow and mid-depth reef sites, perfect for both new and seasoned divers. The reefs here are teeming with marine life—rays, turtles, schools of tropical fish, and even the occasional nurse shark.
You’ll dive among coral gardens, swim through spur-and-groove formations, and glide along ledges and sandy channels that surround small island atolls. With depths ranging from 15 to 80 feet (4.5 to 24 meters) and visibility often stretching up to 75 feet (23 meters), this area offers relaxed diving with plenty to see.
Dive sites are hand-picked each morning based on the day’s weather and ocean conditions to ensure the best possible experience. Whether you're diving or snorkeling, certified professionals guide you every step of the way.
This tour is designed for mixed groups of certified divers and snorkelers, with each group guided separately by experienced professionals. If you're only interested in snorkeling, we recommend booking one of our dedicated snorkel tours for a more tailored experience.

FAQs

What marine life can I see when scuba diving at Fajardo, Puerto Rico’s reefs?

Common sightings include colorful reef fish such as sergeant majors, blue tangs, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and angelfish. You’ll likely see cleaner shrimp and arrow crabs nestled in coral crevices, and schools of grunts and snappers weaving through the reef. Moray eels often peek from holes, while southern stingrays rest in the sand below.

Sea turtles—especially green and hawksbill turtles—are frequently spotted grazing on seagrass or gliding over the reef. Rays, including spotted eagle rays and southern stingrays, are also seen occasionally. While not guaranteed, nurse sharks are sometimes found resting under ledges or cruising through the reef. Lobsters, filefish, trunkfish, and even the occasional barracuda or octopus round out the list of regular reef residents. With visibility often ranging from 30–75 feet (9–23 meters) and a mix of shallow and mid-depth sites (15–80 ft / 6–30 meters), Fajardo offers a rewarding dive experience full of color and life.

Do divemasters, instructors, or snorkel guides dive or snorkel with us?

Yes! There are always PADI Instructors on the boat. All our Dives are guided dives with our PADI Professionals.

All of our snorkel guides are certified to provide CPR and are very well trained and knowledgeable on the areas. They will jump in the water with you.

How deep will we be diving?

Fajardo: Diving depths range from 15 to 80 feet (6 to 30 meters) depending on weather and sea conditions.

How many dive sites at each location?

Fajardo: About 8 different dive sites just offshore a chain of tiny coral island atolls we call “cayos”.

Are there any currents?

There are some mild currents but they do not generally affect the diving areas.

Do I have to snorkel or can I just stay on board?

There is no obligation to go snorkeling. If you do not feel comfortable you’re more than welcome to stay on board. There is no price difference for that.

What is the average range of visibility?

Fajardo and Culebra: Visibility ranges from 20 to 70 feet (6 to 21 meters), with the ocean floor usually being the limit.

How long is the boat ride out to the sites?

Fajardo: 27 minutes approximately from the pier.

Are the seas rough?

After 10:00 am it can be windy. Usually May through December have the calmest seas. Fajardo, having more protection from the wind and swells usually has calmer seas than Fajardo. Motion sickness pill taken at least 1 hour before departure is recommended for those prone to motion sickness.

What is the Blue Flag Award & PADI Green Star Award?

The Blue Flag Award and the PADI Green Star Award recognize sustainability efforts in marine environments but apply to different aspects of ocean conservation.

  • Blue Flag Award: This international certification is given to beaches and marinas that meet high environmental, safety, and water quality standards. It ensures that a beach is clean, well-managed, and supports conservation efforts.
  • PADI Green Star Award: This award is given to PADI dive centers that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability. It recognizes eco-friendly practices such as energy conservation, responsible waste management, and participation in marine conservation initiatives.

Both awards highlight dedication to protecting marine ecosystems, whether through sustainable tourism or responsible diving operations.

What’s the best time of year to dive in Puerto Rico?

Diving in Puerto Rico is great year-round, with warm water and excellent visibility no matter the season. December to April typically offers the clearest visibility, while May to November brings warmer water temperatures, often reaching 84°F (29°C). There’s always amazing marine life to see, making any time a great time to dive!

Can My family or friends all be together on the same boat?

Yes! The Fajardo and the Culebra trips are designed to be combined trips. In this boat we can have snorkelers and Divers together. We also have separate trips that are just for snorkelers.

Can I fly after diving?

Flying directly after scuba diving is incredibly dangerous and could result in a life-threatening illness called the Bends/Decompression Sickness. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) guidelines for flying after diving include:

  • A single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000 ft (305 m) interval of 12 hours suggested.
  • Multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface or any driving to above 1000ft (305m) interval of 18 hours is suggested.
  • Dives requiring decompression stops are recommended to have longer than 18 hours.

Please discuss with your dive guide ahead of time what is suggested!

Can I go hiking after diving?

Any activity that brings you above 1000 ft (305 m) can trigger the Bends/Decompression Sickness. Please check your hike elevation to ensure that at no time you will be going up in elevation. If the hike does go to elevation, you must treat it like a preflight interval as listed above in the flying FAQ.

What sunscreen can I use and why does it matter?

Common sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, as the particles are small enough to be absorbed by corals, causing toxicity and coral bleaching. Reef-friendly sunscreens are formulated without these harmful chemicals. Reef-SAFE sunscreens go a step further by using non-nano particles, which are too large for corals to ingest, helping to preserve marine ecosystems.

Please avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. Consider wearing sun-protective clothing, like long-sleeve rash guards, as an alternative to sunscreen. If you choose a mineral-based sunscreen, ensure it is labeled ‘non-nano.’

Can I dive with a mustache or beard?

You can dive with a beard or mustache but it can prevent a tight seal between the mask and your face, which may cause water to leak in. It is often recommended to shave at least your mustache before diving. If you’d prefer not to shave your mustache, please bring petroleum jelly or chapstick with you. If you coat your mustache in that chapstick or jelly, it may be able to seal and prevent water from getting in.

Can I wear glasses or contacts while diving?

Glasses cannot be worn while diving, but contacts are perfectly fine and recommended for the best experience. Prescription masks are not available for rent, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Additionally, there is an automatic correction effect that occurs underwater due to light refraction, making things appear clearer, but contacts or a personal prescription mask will provide the best visibility.
